The Str TV 3 Mixtape Feature - Nuhtkayz
Thembi Molaba aka Nuhtkayz is a Creative entrepreneur, lyricist, copywriter, and lover of all things crazy. Originally Born in Harrismith, she now lives in Johannesburg. Nuhtkayz’s initial moment of recognition in the local Hip-Hop scene was in 2015 at the SA Hip Hop Awards #SAHHA’s, The Corner Cypher, alongside Patty Monroe, Fifi Cooper and Tazz.
She has two solo mixtapes under her belt; “Schematic chemistry” which
she says was heavily influenced by Lebo Mashile, Ben Sharper & Crooked the
Warmonger; and The Deity Tape where she teamed up with Kanif the Jhatmaster, a
renowned producer and beatmaker.
Originally a poet, who in 2010 decided to spit her written
pieces on beats, inspired by the likes
of T From the V aka Stogie T and Proverb; Nuhtkayz
has evolved into a lyricists of note, a creative writer with the ability to hit
at the heart using words to her own will. A much needed creative for The STR TV 3Mixtape.
We asked Nuhtkayz
to share her thoughts on the Mixtape and this is what she had to say:
Q: How did you get the opportunity to
become part of the Mixtape?
A: L7 was
promoting slots online & I had some work finished so I submitted the
material, they felt the work & approved it. That's how I became part of the
mixtape.
Q: Why did you agree to become part of
this Mixtape?
A: I think
it's a great time for creative people in general, there's room for variety
& new curators in the culture. It's phresh!
Q: What element do you think you added
to the Mixtape, that’s different from all artists involved in the project?
A: My
individual contribution is the dynamic of an honest writer. It's not rap if it
isn't poetry, it's not rap if it's not art.
Q: Please breakdown the track(s) that
you are featured on: concept/ writing process/intended message/ collaboration/
production
A: I shared
"soldier on" with the project, it's an energising piece about getting
up every time you fall. Just find your strength & keep missioning.
Production credits to Alka for the smoking beat.
Q: As one of the female artist on the
tape, are there any challenges that you faced in any way, and how did you deal
with them?
A: I can't
think of any challenge I faced just because of my gender with this project. I
submitted my work, they approved it into the project and that was it.
Q: In one sentence how would you
describe The STR 3 Mixtape?
A: Artistry
for the purists at heart.
Q: Do you have any special message or
statement you would like to make in regards to SA Hip Hop in general?
A: I would
thank people who support & engage with undiscovered talent, this makes an
otherwise rocky road really smooth.
Nuhtkayz once stated “All
this is about learning how to love, respect and embrace your individuality.
There's nothing real or amazing about existing as the prototype of somebody
else or existing in uniform with the rest of the world like how society trains
us up to be.” Reading this definitely gives an idea of the type of content and
message that is in the creative offering that she dedicated to The STR 3 Mixtape.
